Based in Toronto, Ninja and Trouble are a real couple. In their latest release, they take us on their vacation adventures to the beautiful shores of Costa Rica. Beach Cove shows the couple devouring each other on the beach for any eyes to see as the wave lap up onto the shore. The risks of being caught heightening the sexual tension. Then we are taken to the privacy of an outdoor bed where Ninja has his way with Trouble. It’s gorgeously shot through a white net curtain, making you feel like the one behind the camera as Ninja gently tugs on Troubles hair, fucking and spanking her as she masturbates to her first on screen orgasm.
Nympho Ninja’s are becoming pioneers of the new porn movement with over 130000 followers and a loyal community of people that help spread body positivity and sexual confidence. As a real life couple creating and directing their own films, I just had to find out more…
What made you decide to shoot Private Paradise?
We went to Costa Rica with hopes of shooting some sexy scenes in really beautiful locations. The first place we stayed in happened to have this little private cove tucked away behind the beach, which we had to take advantage off, so a few days later we headed over with our cameras. But it wasn’t so private as in the video you can see the blurry shape of a beach goer in the distance and after finishing we noticed a couple of spectators pulling their cameras out. But the footage was too beautiful that it didn’t stop us from wanting to create more. So from there we intentionally sought out rentals with interesting spaces where we could shoot more privately and found ourselves staying in a unique artist’s home with an outdoor bed. We fell in love with the country, so wanted to both catalogue our trip and the intimacy and share it with our followers on Nymphoninjas.net.
Where does the name Nympho Ninjas come from?
It came from the idea of wanting to be sexually forward and proud but staying secretive about it at the same time.
How do you split (Ninja/Trouble) the creativity of the project?
We’re both trained artists with BFA’s from an art university, so we equally contribute to ideas for our videos or photos. Ninja’s background in film editing and production lends itself well to the technical production of our films whereas Trouble’s interest in aesthetics and curation of spaces helps with location. We often brainstorm together before shooting and share ideas of what we have in mind for whatever we’re creating at the time.

Many of your films have a very special “aesthetic of intimacy”. For example in Trouble’s House, this is a crucial element, where you are experimenting with BDSM and shaving…
The shaving part of Trouble’s tape is really special because it’s a unique experience to share as a couple. We get a lot of questions on our blog about all sorts of kinks and we have a pretty open dialogue with some of our friends about sexuality. But we noticed that shaving had never been mentioned before. The most important ingredient to intimacy is trust and in order to have someone shave your most sensitive and private parts takes a lot of that. As a real couple who live together we’ve been fortunate to have built up that degree of trust and intimacy so we try to share it as much as possible in our work.
Can you explain in your own words how do you see intimacy as a subject in your films?
In some of our videos it will start out or end with one of us adjusting the camera, which really connects our viewers to the moment, and grounds it in reality. It shows that there are no camera men, directors, lighting rigs or anything other than us and our cameras which makes the intimacy in our films really prevalent. Even in Ninja Approved: San Francisco there’s a part of knowing that Ninja is the one behind the cameras that made fans of our other videos excited to see. It’s often when you’re watching porn or any genre of film that you try to forget about the person shooting the video and focus on the performers or plot, but knowing it was Ninja’s eye behind the lens adds an extra layer of intimacy to that scene. Many of the original viewers of it were already familiar with him as a subject and got to understand through San Francisco his style as a videographer and feel his presence as a voyeur as well.
What I love the most about your work is your willingness to experiment. What has been the best scene you have shot whist experimenting? How much do you have to improvise, how much of planned?
Everything we’ve done has been spur of the moment, for most of our scenes together we just set up the cameras and then start kissing each other and see where it goes. There’s a moment in Trouble’s Tape where Trouble is dominating Ninja and then provides him with a moment of tenderness and the scene progresses to her submitting to him as he begins to tie her up. We knew we wanted to shoot BDSM footage when creating it but the switch that occurs in it was a natural progression which contributed to the reality of the moment. Often we’ll plan props and location ahead of time but the actual acts themselves in the films are spontaneous and reflections of the real sex we have when the cameras are off.

Internet: How has it helped you to build the Nympho Ninjas community/brand? Would you say your project is a “child of the net”?
Nympho Ninjas is 100% a “child of the net”. No more than 20 years ago something like this wouldn’t have been impossible, or just taken way longer to put together and cost a lot of money. An NN zine would have been really amazing if we had been around in the 70’s but luckily we have the technology now to quickly connect people all around the world who have the same sex positive perspective and want to help themselves and others discover and share their sexuality.

What´s the best reaction you have had from a fan of your films?
There’s been a few really special reviews or reactions that stand out, but one thing that was really confirming to hear came from a friend of ours last year at the Feminist Porn Conference. The whole Feminist Porn movement has been amazing and so important for our culture and our friend pointed out that some people may initially turn away from something called “feminist porn” because of their own prior judgement on the term. But our films stand true to the ethics and ideals of Feminist Porn without being advertised as such. With that in mind it’s possible that some people are beginning to watch and enjoy feminist porn because of the Ninja Approved collection who might have never planned to give it a try.

A distinctive feature of your films – you never show face shots of yourselves. What made you decide to make it a key element to all the films you perform in? Is it just protecting your privacy, is there something else?
Protecting our privacy is a big part of it but it’s also what makes us ninjas. As individuals we never want to be bigger than the cause so by hiding our faces we hope that the ideas our blog and films represent will remain the most important part and there’s less focus on us as individuals. Though you can still see a lot of our faces and all of our bodies in our scenes we think there’s an element to the secrecy that excites our viewers. It keeps their imagination active and let’s the people watching fantasize about what can’t be seen, and maybe even mentally insert themselves into the situations a bit easier.
You sometimes use other performers in your films. What´s your process when deciding who to cast? How is it different to work with them?
We hope to be able to work with other performers more but living in Toronto keeps us quite limited. It would be incredible to get to travel to Amsterdam or San Francisco regularly in order to create films with the huge community of talent they have but it’s not in the cards right now. We currently don’t have a process at all for casting but that’s something we want to work on and develop. We hope to find people either living in or travelling through our city that want to model or perform for our cameras. For Ninja in San Francisco the process for working with Owen Gray and Cadence Cross was really stress-free. Owen and him developed a friendship while being fans of each others blogs and communicating on line and so working together seemed like the logical next step. Owen recommended Cadence and they had great chemistry together and were incredibly easy to work with. For him it was completely different to work behind the camera as it’s what he’s most used to and loves to do. As both a technical filmmaker and a comfortable performer with Trouble there’s a part of his mind that can’t help but wish he could move the camera, or pan the focus, or zoom while we are shooting together. By getting to shoot another couple he’s able to focus on all the little details that get lost while performing as well as getting to see the intimacy through the lens.
