Music in porn: don’t yell! I know that for a long time it’s been a synonym for the worst stuffing cheap pseudo-sensuous sounds, such as flirting saxophones with an electronic chill out base. We also have to take into consideration all the issues with having the rights cleared, so music is an expensive part within the audiovisual industry.

We often resort to music libraries, like a lot of production companies do. Libraries that we browse very carefully, making a selection of themes and styles that could fit into a particular short film. We try all of them, and if nothing works we continue searching. My editors, Noel and Aleix, are the ones who come to me with a proposal in the first place, and together we decide if it works or if we should change it.

In The Art of Spanking, Beethoven’s Symphony Nº9 emphasizes our tribute to Europe’s kinky traditions.

Music vary a lot from one short to another, like the tone and setting of the stories. We have a dramatic use of it, which is quite different from most adult entertainment: we use music to create atmospheres, but also for storytelling! We tend to avoid recurring systematically to music in every sex scene, to make a difference with mainstream porn but also because I feel that the music “invades” the rest. I love to listen to the best sound of all: the performers breathing, moaning and asking for more while they have sex.

In Pansexuals, we use the music from a band that is close to the universe of the young fictional characters: Monsieur Cactus from Barcelona.

Every once in a while we collaborate with musicians that make their music available to us, or even make a special composition for a film. This is luxury! This week’s release is the first title in the Femme Chocolat series by Candida Royalle. Afrodite Superstar is one of the most relevant titles in black feminist erotica. As you all know – since I’ve been quite excited about this week’s release at XConfessions – I am very interested in exploring the connection between food and sex. But a few weeks ago I started thinking about music as an aphrodisiac too, after a journalist asked me which songs I’d recommend to have sex too and boost intercourse.

Then, the idea of elaborating this playlist came up, and I decided to make a survey in the Lust headquarters to learn which music turned my team on since they were the handiest study sample I had. Well… After 10 years directing erotic movies, I did know that “erotica” is a slippery subject, that the turn-ons do vary a lot from one person to another. But what I didn’t expect was such a debate concerning music to fuck with! Someone proposed one song, someone else put their hands above their head. Some people like feel-good songs with lots of guitars, some others prefer energetic electronica, a bunch liked slower and more classical rhythms, like Marvin Gaye.

Undoubtedly, we have to recognize Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin’s merits for having delivered a song such as Je t’aime, moi non plus, which is considered a hot one with a wide consensus. That is why this hymn to sex is the opening to this fucking playlist, in a curious version by Pet Shop Boys. All the tracks are a selection from the survey I did. We had a huge wealth of delicious delicacies decorating the table with reputations as aphrodisiacs: figs, papayas, asparagus, quail, chocolate mouse… and my personal favorite… Oysters, to play homage to a true classic.

Your work is often very symbolic, taking inspiration in “the roots of western culture”. For example, Christianity and Greek mythology. What attracts you to these sources? Why do you think it works so well at Four Chambers?

The nature of symbolism is so important to us because it allows the viewer to take away more than the immediate surface. The nature of a short film means we get a small amount of time to tell a story and with Four Chambers we try to give a slice, leaving more space for imagination to create the rest of the narrative, subjective to each viewer.

I think there’s a lot of interesting discussion to be had by appropriating roles and themes from history and culture in a modern, sexual setting. I think the way these stories are retold from history (although heavy in sexual undertones) often leave their female characters passive. I reimagine them with power and sexual agency, confronting the camera. I think there are elements of these stories and characters we reference that are universal to a modern experience of sex and power and we enjoy playing with that relationship.

You have stated that you “exist naked on screen” with the idea of “the screen” being a fundamental part of your philosophy. Would you say this is the primal tool at Four Chambers? Is it part of your extreme modernity? Do you think your work could exist without the internet and instead imagine what your productions would have been like, in say, the 1970s? Performance art maybe?

The screen and the idea of a network of interconnected experience through digital replication are really vital to both the way we make and distribute our films and the concepts behind the work itself. Technology has been an incredible tool in expanding our collective experience, and that, of course, includes sex. A screen is seen as too sterile, ordered and cold to capture the complexity of a physical connection, but I don’t see them as in competition but that the digital experience is an exciting augmentation. Four Chambers works to explore the nature of intimacy and sexuality using these new tools. Physicality had always been so important to me when I was making artwork, but I think our current accepted definition of what is “real” and what is “unreal” (existing only online) is adapting and changing over time. It’s important to us to engage with that shifting conversation.

I really value the work of performance artists, like Carolee Schneeman, Helen Chadwick etc, I certainly see my body as my medium and I think that our work is an extension of that idea (We tested the idea of “live art” with a live performance stream on a webcam site). But I think without the mechanics of the camera and the editing suite our work would look and feel very different, I think it’s an intrinsic part of the atmosphere we are looking to create and where we position ourselves conceptually.

Your work concentrates a lot on textures of the body related to nature. Why is this? What benefits does technology have in portraying the themes and symbolism in this way in your films? Are there specific film making techniques you like to use?

It’s interesting that you’d identified that because it’s not a connection that we had considered before!

I think we try to focus on highlighting the shapes of bodies in a more organic, abstract way over just purely graphic depictions. The camera helps a lot with this. We often use a shallow focus that draws the eye across a shot, so that not everything is clear all at once. I like to leave a little to guesswork. Playing with retiming, slowing or speeding up in post production makes movements seem more fluid and organic. I think everyone can admit that sex essentially can be amusing and awkward! What we are creating sometimes seems more choreographed but I promise it’s just a trick of the edit.

You also do a remarkable work on anatomy, from an artistic point of view. How would you describe what the human body means to you?

Thank you so much! Maybe it’s because I spent a lot of time locked in a room doing endless life drawing at art school? I guess I didn’t know then how useful it would be! For me, the body - my body - is an incredible tool of expression and communication. Being on camera has taught me to be less afraid of it. To use it in it’s entirety and make it work for me. It’s my greatest weapon and companion. Sex is such a big part of that. Fucking, and watching people fuck on camera challenged and changed my preconceptions of what’s “attractive” and “beautiful”. If you don’t take ownership of your body and your sexuality, someone else will.

In term of distribution: are you happy with the channels you have found? Is it effective and balanced?

We haven’t ever really focused on the idea of commercial distribution as such. I guess growing up as a child of social media it seemed like the natural thing to do it ourselves. There’s an incredible community of independent sex workers, sex writers, pornographers, amateurs and their fans on sites like Twitter and Tumblr who pass on work that they like, which was how the word got our about our work really. Finding a way to begin to partially fund the project without treating it like a business for profit has been at times frustrating and complex. It’s a learning process we’re still working through! I’m still surprised at how far it’s gone considering we chose not to engage with more established corporate methods. I love the freedom and control that the DIY ethos gives us.

Collaborations are a huge part of your work ethic. Where are these collaborators, mostly? Do they make you feel like a part of the new wave of porn as visual erotic artists rather than pornographers?

I like to say collaborators rather than performers because often we are the least experienced people involved when making a film! We’re self taught, learning as we go. We’ve been lucky enough to work with some really talented and exciting people and we can’t begin to say what their influence and support for the project has had on the work we’ve produced. Where to find them? That would be the internet. There’s a growing community of people exploring creative depictions of sexuality outside of what is easily accessible on the surface on free porn tube sites. We work with people whose work inspires us. I think there is certainly a new wave building. With the growing accessibility of good camera equipment and the ease of distribution on social media, more and more people are beginning to put their sexual ideas and experience on screen. We’re just excited to be a part of that.

2005 Having lived in Barcelona now for 5 years, I produce my first short film THE GOOD GIRL. It’s uploaded for free on the Internet before receiving two million downloads in just a few months (YouTube didn’t even exist yet!!) 

2006 After the success of THE GOOD GIRL, I go on to create my own production company LUST FILMS. Four more short films are produced to create FIVE HOT STORIES FOR HER which gains my company much notoriety and really launches my career as an erotic film director. 

I decide to create erikalust.com, which was then a blog and I move the office from my living room to a co-working space in Poblenou. Back then, Lust was just a rented table…

2007 My first baby is born. Her name is Lara like the muse in Dr. Zhivago. Pablo, my partner and Lara’s father, comes to work with me at LUST, which is starting to grow. Now we are two people!

2008 BARCELONA SEX PROJECT is shot and premiered.
GOOD PORN: A WOMAN’S GUIDE is published by Seal Press and translated into different languages. I have become a published author and it feels amazing!

2009 The short film HANDCUFFS is produced, you can watch it for free here. Lust keeps growing. Now we’re three! 

2010 My second and youngest daughter is born. She’s named Liv after two other muses: Liv Tyler and Liv Ullman. I shoot and launch LIFE LOVE LUST. Life is going pretty well…

2011 CABARET DESIRE is produced and gets awarded, as well as the short film ROOM 33 which is part of the collaborative project by Casa Camper: Hotel. I’m starting to shoot more and more. Now we’re five.

2012  Media is starting to pay attention to what I’m doing. I’m starting to get recognition for my work in many different countries.

2013 I start a new venture: XCONFESSIONS, an ongoing crowd-sourced project, which is very successful. Two short films are shot every month to share with XC users. We’re on fire! Now we are seven at LUST.

After the BOOM of 50 Shades of Grey, I decide to go along with the trend and write and publish NORA’S SONG, my first erotic novel which is translated to several languages including German by Random House. 

2014 XC short films are edited and assembled as separate volumes. The website is a hit! It gets around ten confessions a day and has over FIFTY THOUSAND members. 

LUST moves to the emblematic BORN district in Barcelona. WOW!!

I also give a talk at TEDxVIENNA about the importance of #CHANGEPORN: 

2015 It’s LUST FILMS tenth anniversary which coincides with the FEMINIST PORN AWARDS. The FPA is honoring Indie Erotica with a special evening event, which I’ll be hosting. This year XC goes on tour: Toronto, London, Chicago and other surprises! XC4 and XC5 are being released and a very ambitious audiovisual project is in pre-production. 

It’s been a crazy ride! 

Fifteen is a great number… I’ve been in BCN for 15 years. Pablo and I have been together for 15 years. Am I hearing wedding bells? There are 15 within the production team during shootings. The growth is unmeasured… Now we are 15 at LUST.

Having been at Lust Films since March 2014, not only does 2015 mark 1 Year of XConfessions, but also the anniversary for our Content Manager and Line Producer, Almudena! As one of the creative minds behind the XConfessions series, I work very closely with her when creating new films from script writing and casting to website content. Which right now consists of getting together ideas for Volume 5! She a woman of many talents and is our go to girl when it comes to the creative sector of the company, so I couldn´t wait to have you all meet her…

What is your official job title at Lust films?

I am the Content Manager and the Line Producer of the XConfessions series.

When someone asks you what you do, what is your typical response?

As the Content Manager, myself and the team manage tons of content on a daily basis: content we produce, communicate, or receive from others who are talking about us. I then put all that chaos into order! I develop the editorial line of Lust Films, and take creative decisions about what we communicate and share, especially in Erika’s blog and in xconfessions.com - which is a very avant-garde website that needs to be fed almost every day with novelties.

As the Line Producer, I collaborate with Erika developing the concept and the screenplays behind each XConfessions short film. Then I produce those screenplays. We have an Executive Producer, which is Pablo, but the Line Producer is the one in the battlefield – that means that I am very active on set while shooting. I try to guarantee that Erika is able to shoot the films that she wants in the best possible conditions.

How did you come to get the job?

I was engaged as a freelancer for a fashion film that Erika was developing as a collaboration with a fashion brand. Then the project was cancelled – unfortunately such things happen often. In the meantime, XConfessions was demanding an incredible production output, so Erika and Pablo decided to expand the staff introducing someone with a filmmaking background. I was just there, still mourning because I was having had so much fun with that adult fashion film that was cancelled!

What was it about Erika Lust and the company that made you want to work here?

Sexuality is one of the most interesting subjects for me to work with and Erika is trying to make the most outstanding and artistic films exploring it. As a writer, I feel thrilled when I have material in my hands that freaks so many people out like that. I’ve always experienced sexuality as something very natural, even though that kind of education wasn’t the most appropriate or open conversation where I come from. I guess it must have been the films and the books!

Since I am a screenwriter, I’m going to tell you a story. When I was a teenager a guy asked me out, I said no because I didn’t like him – very logical reason. He felt outraged and said he would stop standing up for me when people said I was an easy girl (you know how high school is!). I thought to myself “I want to be Lauren Bacall in To Have and to Have Not, I want to be Bette Davies in Now, Voyager!, I want to be Kristin Scott Thomas in The English Patient, I want to date the Baron in the Trees. I want to be adventurous and live with passion and travel the world and have a hundred lovers! How can that be compatible with dating a flavorless guy just because he thinks he can protect my honour as a woman?” All those female characters I cherished had such a positive sexual energy among many other interesting things…

So I love it here, because there are still so many guys who insult girls just for revenge, and that is just a symptom of a greater problem than can have much nastier demonstrations. Besides doing great filmmaking and having tons of fun, I think we do something useful to change that.

What do you do on a usual day?

Lots of different things! First thing in the morning, I make coffee. The entire creative department at Lust Films is completely addicted to that! I open my emails and answer the most urgent messages. Then I might have a conference call with a well known dominatrix in the UK, for example, with casting purposes. I listen to her amazing stories. Afterwards… I work very close with Noel and Aleix, from the post-production department. We sit down with a coffee and discuss the editing, music, etc. of the films that are being finished. Erika often joins us to give her input as the director. I revise all of our online sites and check that nothing is broken or out of date. I also love the screenwriting meetings with Erika. I bring her the most interesting confessions and we spend hours imagining the films. I also do a lot of networking with external collaborators and often go out of the office on location tours and other production-related stuff.

You work within a very busy, high stress and creative sector of the company. How do you make sure you keep your cool whilst also keeping your creative juices flowing?

I think you need to have a special nature to work within the filmmaking industry – that’s why so many people quit at a certain point. If your like me thought, you end up enjoying the adrenaline…

What´s been the most exciting or strangest thing that has happened to you since you´ve worked here?

The world of cinema is great because it embraces all sorts of weird people, so go figure when you mix it up with adult entertainment (the rush of the forbidden!). Every day is an adventure.

Once I was persuaded to play a supporting role in one of the films. It was a chambermaid who discovered a naked man in the corridor of a hotel. Since I was working on the script, I promoted myself to staff manageress – I got a cooler costume!

What do you see happening at Lust Films in 2015?

Lots of amazing things! We keep growing and we are opening up the path in so many ways as indie erotic producers. We would love to reach wider audiences while remaining creative an edgy and to have our films showcased in big film festivals!

Easter isn´t considered the sexiest of holidays, unless you are into rabbits or religious fetishes, I guess. Last year, a friend of mine went to Ibiza to spend the holidays with some friends, leaving her boyfriend alone in Barcelona. CONDOMS. I know many of us have that awkward image of them, as ugly and a huge passion killer, something you see between teenagers in movies like American Pie. But I´m going to prove to you why they are actually fun, sexy and mean safer sex for everyone!

I am constantly asked about the use of condoms in porn, but I have a number of reasons why sometimes they are used and other times they are not:

STORYTELLING

One of the main aspects of my work that I take huge pride in, is to tell a story through my films. To make the situation, the characters and above all, the sex, as realistic as it can be. So sometimes that means the inclusion and exclusion of condoms. For example, TAKE ME DRUNK, I´M HOME, shows a couple in a long term committed relationship, so it makes more sense not to use a condom.

But then in PANSEXUALS, the story surrounds an unplanned encounter between four friends, so the use of a condom is logical. The same goes for upcoming film CAR SEX GENERATION, where a young couple meets for a spontaneous rendezvous – so they use a condom because that’s what would probably happen in real life.You can find the Durex Natural XL Condoms featured in this short in our store.

SAFETY

I have a strict policy on all our performers being tested to keep them safe. We won´t shoot if any of the tests are not complete by the day of shooting. But also condoms can be part of that safety and a personal preference to the performer, which is important for me as I like to make sure performers are as comfortable as they can be so the best sex can be caught on camera.

The use of condoms is also down to the regulation of the country you are shooting in. In Spain, the use of condoms is not regulated, but in places like France it´s mandatory and in the US it´s becoming an increasingly bigger issue. So if you want to have sex with confidence and no worries we have a variety to choose from. There are the Vegan Condoms by Glyde, and Extra Sensitive or Mutual Climax condoms by Durex. But then…who said safe sex can´t be fun too!

FUN!

This brings me to my final reason for using condoms… they are actually sexy and fun! Take one of my latest releases POWER PUSSY. Have you ever felt cheated by your own gender? Like the sexuality you were born with was more of a weight than a blessing? This all sounds very vintage and out-dated, but still today, we hear stories of women having to dress up as men to be taken seriously, to get recognition, to be entitled to the same rights as their counterparts. This has been happening for centuries and we think it might be over by now, but we are wrong. Here’s my account to some of the greatest “survivors” of inequality: 

1. Joan of Arc: had to “become” a man to join the army and bring the french troops to a victory in the Hundred Year’s War.

2. Malinda Blalock: joined the army as Samuel Blalock, posing as her husband’s older brother so he wouldn’t go to war alone. 

3. Enriqueta Favez: also called Enrique Favez was a swiss surgeon who practiced medicine in the Napoleonic War and in Cuba. She was later exiled from Spanish territory and lived the rest of her life as a nun. 

4. Brita Nilsdotter: this Swedish born also joined the army as Petter Hagberg and fought the wars before being awarded the Medal of Bravery. 

5. Margaret Ann Bulkley: had to register under the name of James Berry in order to study medicine in the UK circa 1800. She not only finished University, but was also highly recognized for her fight to improve her patient’s treatment conditions. 

6. Dorothy Lawrence : pretended to be a man to become a war journalist during World War I. 

7. Dorothy Lucille Tipton: known as Billy Tipton, was a Jazz pianist and saxophonist who had to take his father’s name to immerse into the Oklahoma Jazz scene of the 40′s. 

8. Teena Brandon: after a horrible childhood, she decided to start a new life as her “real self” and became Brandon Teena as she always wanted to be a man. She started a relationship with a woman and befriended two ex cons, who, with the discovery of Teena’s real gender, raped her and murder her. 

9. Sisa Abu Daooh: after the death of her husband in the 70′s, this Egyptian woman decided to dress as a man to provide for her family more easily without being harassed. She’s been awarded the Woman Breadwinner award by her Government and until this day she dresses as a man to continue working. 

10. DJ Tatiana Alvarez: dance DJ and music producer best know as Matt Muset, aka Musikillz, to catch a break in the Industry. 

These women didn’t have a choice like some of my characters in XConfessions like this pretty guy in Dude looks like a lady. It saddens me that history keeps repeating itself. It all sounds very vintage, but, still today, we have Tatiana Alvarez and Brandon Teena…

I just love how incredibly diverse and creative XC users are. They share such great stories with me! This week in XConfessions I go further with this arthouse short film that is something that’s unlikely to be found in the adult film industry: Spectrophilia .

Beautiful actresses Amber Nevada and Dido Wend, whom we know from previous XC  short film Pansexuals , make a 360 turn with their characters to bring the dead back to life in my artsiest short film yet. They master their performances to create a feeling of longing and desire, mixed with fear and passion, while engaging the audience in a supernatural erotic experience.

Lesbic sex, an empty room, candles, a couch, death… This beautiful black and white piece mixes elements of erotica that are considered taboo in many parts of the world, however are widely practiced. Have you ever feel aroused while scared or in fear? Have you ever wonder what it’s like to have a sexual encounter with a ghost or spirit? This is Spectrophilia a phenomenon and a fetish, the wondering of the afterlife and the desire of bring them both together and fuck while you do so.

I loved the opportunity to shoot this short film based on a disturbingly emotional poem on XConfessions that embraces curiosity, self pleasure, sex craving from beyond and supernatural facesitting! It’s thrilling, it’s edgy, it’s fearful and sexy whilst also nostalgic. It was super fun to shoot too!

Starting a business is a big deal. Not only it is pretty challenging economically, personally and socially, but also demands an emotional and psychological investment in every single action you take. Your business is your baby and it hurts when someone hurts your baby, doesn’t it?

Being a female in the Adult Industry has been quite a ride. From the judgemental eyes of prudes, to the chauvinistic disbeliefs of Industry peers. I expected all of this when I first started. What I did not expect was the ingratitude of the technological era, whose tools made me feel safe to take on this venture in the first place. Social Media such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Vimeo, Tumblr and WordPress along with Payment Tools that makes everyone’s business easier like Paypal, are suppose to help us reach more people, send out our message, and grow… But then, why it doesn’t it do that for me?

A few months ago, the UK ban on Porn reminded me how far back we are on the subject of sex and its concept and interpretation as something natural, beautiful and healthy. It also made me think about my business and my fellow Industry members. “This is bad for business” I thought. It reminded me of a primary school class, when someone does something bad and the entire class gets punished. Mainstream porn can be offensive, rough, disgusting and misleading, but not all of us working with adult content belong to the same basket. So why are we treated like we were?

Remember last year, when my Facebook account was suspended? I was so shocked to discover that it had to do with my take on the new Spanish abortion reform. I am even more surprise now to discover that these same Social Networks are now blocking Safe sex campaigns for linking to “sexual content”. How are we suppose to educate on sex if we don’t talk about sex? I feel the hypocrisy of the Websites every time I see Kim Kardashian’s ass or some Reality Show where women come across as simple-minded, superficial housewives. Are these sorts of things less offensive than a nipple? Are controversial and suggestive song lyrics less offensive than consensual, beautiful, artistic sex?

It keeps getting worse. A few weeks ago, my Twitter account got suspended for violating their rules and conditions. It came back afterwards, but they gave me a warning: any explicit material and I’m out! . The same goes to Tumblr, who has made it mandatory to categorize certain content into NSFW or Adult.

I understand the fact that the sites with huge traffic are trying to protect their users, but who are they really protecting? From who or what? The bans and censorship are only slowing down the process of spreading the new face of porn, created by the Adult Film Producers like myself who make quality content embodying our message of equality.

I have said it before: the solution is not prohibiting, it’s improving it. As Cindy Gallop, founder and producer of Make Love not Porn said, we need to disrupt the mainstream Industry of porn and facilitate every single possible tool to those working on behalf of the new porn, the one that has values, work ethos, great work conditions and a human approach.

In a couple of days I’ll be at The Feminist Porn Awards #FPA2015, proving alongside my partners in crime, that we are business women, not sex offenders. It’s time for porn to change!

It will be the first time I will be giving a directors cut of the best short films from XConfessions in 2014, which is all part of #XConTour and continuing my #changeporn campaign that all began with my TEDxVienna talk last year.

Being my third time at the event, the team at Good For Her have created another fabulous event with other talented producers and directors being recognized for the intuitive work they do for sex-positive pornography. Plus, I have the honor of a few award nominations for XConfessions to look forward too as well. I could never imagined my small project having got this far without the support of the awards and my followers.
