Visual erotica has played a large part in video games since the beginning. Having provided exhilarating fantasy situations and characters, it has allowed us to imagine sexual desires that far outreach that of reality. So much so, you can now find a wealth of online fan-fiction which has created some very interesting fantasies from the open minds of the public.
The first erotic computer game to get our minds racing thought, was fantasy game Softporn Adventure. The main target of the player is to seek out and seduce three women whilst avoiding certain hazards along the way, but all through textual commands. That´s right, NO graphics. So everything was left to your imagination. Which we all know is something I find fascinating and base my entire project XConfessions on!
Nowadays, video games are full of graphic images, with some even going as far as simulating sex, in good ways and in very very bad ways. Take the very rightly banned Japanese ´eroge´ game Rapelay – I don´t think I need to explain this one. But then there´s the more tasteful erotica in Mass Effects allowing players to engage in same sex relations if they so choose.
However, It seems that most eroticism in games place women in weaker sexualised positions with there being very few that place it as such a focal point as it once was in the likes of Softporn Adventure or Leisure Suit Larry. But it’s still slipped into many, take one of the biggest selling games Grand Theft Auto – every women is a prostitute, drug addict or criminal, used by men, dressed in skimpy outfits. This is another industry that needs to have more women involved in its development. But I’ll leave that discussion for another day…
