1953 by Julia Schoenstaedt is a beautiful and authentic vintage film starring Viktoria Vaar and XConfessions newcomer Reed.
A shimmering low light falls across the room of a nearly empty pub. Chairs are stacked on the tables and we sense that the night is coming to an end. A woman enters the pub. She is dressed very elegantly, she clearly is a woman of wealth. She smiles when her eyes meet the woman’s behind the bar. She looks over to a group of men sitting at a table as if to check whether anyone had noticed their secret exchange of looks. A gesture that is a reminder of the time they live in. In the 50s even in a modern, progressive city like London, loving the wrong person could make you a criminal. But queer people had love lives long before two women could walk hand in hand into a bar in London without fear and laws have never made anybody less gay.
When the woman walks over, the men give her a testing look which she meets with the same strength. The men continue to mind their own business as she walks away to sit down on a sofa in the far other corner. She puts her bag on the table and fishes out cigarettes. She lights the cigarette when the girl comes to her table and puts down a glass of liqueur. She smiles knowingly at the woman. The woman smiles back. They both know that they won’t be going home alone tonight.
