Refugee’s Welcome by Bruce LaBruce
“A few years ago I was displaced from the country I lived in, due to wars that are nothing to do with me and are out of my control. I was forced to travel for many months until I managed to end up in a country so completely different from my own that I never knew how I could see it as a home. Until one day I met a man.”
From a confession by QuentinQueer

“Berlin is unique, it is one of the bastions of leftism in Europe. It may be one of the most open cities for refugees” – Bruce LaBruce
So begins ones of the more unusual confessions that I have received on XConfessions.com. Inspired by this deeply moving and brave story, I decided to collaborate with a male director for the story of a gay Syrian refugee arriving in Germany: the prolific, fantastic and controversial director Bruce LaBruce! Here as a Guest Director shooting XC’s first ever gay film!

Addressing the biggest humanitarian crisis since World War II, Germany has taken in 1.2 million refugees so far, and the number is growing. So what better place to set this film than in Berlin? A Syrian refugee is living in Germany when he stumbles across a poetry reading by a tattooed, kind-eyed man. Not understanding each other’s language, they nevertheless share a moment of recognition, of desire, from across the room. Too shy to approach any further, the young man walks away. But that won’t be the last time they meet…
According to the UN Refugee Agency, there are almost 5 million Syrian refugees in exile in the world. Germany has given asylum to 1.170.000 of them, a fact that has sparked both record numbers of people volunteering while at the same time an increase in hate crimes by racist, far-right xenophobic movements.
Brutal, gentle, sexy, romantic and earth-shatteringly moving, this film is an exploration of how our differences can become our similarities; how in a world being turned upside down, love and desire are still the strongest forces of all.
In this short film Bruce has captured the best of human nature and the best of the German welcoming spirit. We must kill the resurgence of xenophobia and racism in Europe and the US with messages like the one in this story. We must stand united in our diversity.
“Now the phrase Refugees Welcome has an entirely new meaning for me.”
