Where are you on the gay spectrum? Is anyone ever one hundred or zero percent straight or gay? I don’t think so! That’s what artist iO Tillet Wright wanted to highlight with her ambitious project Self Evident Truths. Tired of hateful reporting and discrimination against gay people, iO set out to photograph 10,000 people that identify as anything other than 100 % straight.
The idea is to capture the humanity and beauty in all of us through simple black and white portraits, and iO hopes that by helping to blur the lines around sexuality and gender it will be harder to discriminate against those who identify as something other than straight. Brilliant, huh? Then there will be a massive exhibition showcasing the photos in Washington DC.
You might have seen Cara Delevingne or Lily-Rose Depp rock one of the project’s “WE ARE YOU” t-shirts. I’m SO getting one – and iO, I applaud you for your initiative and creativity. The project really embodies how the power of art can be used as a tool for liberation. Very inspiring!
Also, check out iO’s TED-talk to understand more about the philosophy behind the project. She is charming as hell!
